Carbon Cycle Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the elements that make up organisms.
Hydrogen, Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen make up 95% of an organisms body.
What is the biogeochemical cycle?
The cycle of four elements within the biosphere.
What is the key element found in living things?
Organic substances always contain carbon and hydrogen and often contain oxygen and nitrogen.
Whats the difference between organic and inorganic molecules?
Organic contains both C and H atoms while Inorganic do not contain both C and H.
Why is carbon important?
It is found in all the building blocks of cells.
How is carbon used in photosynthesis?
Carbon in CO2 provides the atoms for glucose production during photosynthesis, the fuel that all living things depend on.
Where is carbon found?
The atmosphere, the oceans, on the surface of earth, and the earth’s crust.
How are fossil fuels made?
The remains of living things were exposed to high levels of pressure and heat, this pressure and heat produced a chemical change in the biotic matter into the energy rich fuels.
How does carbon get into the atmosphere?
Volcanic activity, burning of fossil fuels, cellular respiration and decomposition of dead organisms.
