Carbon + Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the Carbon Cycle?
Movement of carbon between air, organisms, soil, and oceans.
What removes CO₂ from the air?
Photosynthesis by green plants/algae.
How is carbon added to the atmosphere?
Respiration, decomposition, combustion of wood/fossil fuels.
What role do oceans play in the carbon cycle?
Absorb and store carbon dioxide.
What disrupts the carbon cycle?
Burning fossil fuels & deforestation.
What is the Nitrogen Cycle?
Movement of nitrogen through atmosphere, organisms, and soil.
What is nitrogen fixation?
Bacteria in roots or soil turn N₂ into ammonium (NH₄⁺).
What do nitrifying bacteria do?
Convert ammonium to nitrates (NO₃⁻) for plant use.
What is denitrification?
Bacteria convert nitrates back to N₂ gas.
