1
Q

Use of methanal

A

Was used by biologists to preserve specimens but now restricted due to toxicity. Still raw material for the manufacture for a range of thermosetting plastics.

Q

Why are bps of carbonyl compounds lower than alcohols of same size

A

As cannot form hydrogen bonds between molecules

6
Q

Why do longer chain carbonyl compounds not dissolve in water

A

As carbon chain lengthens London forces stronger and energy to overcome London forces becomes stronger than energy released in hydrogen bonding with water meaning cannot disrupt hydrogen bonding network/ overcome London forces between chains
