Carbonyl Group Flashcards
(7 cards)
How soluble in water are carbonyl compounds?
Shorter chained carbonyl compounds are completely soluble, but as the chan gets longer they become less and less soluble
What are the physical properties of carbonyl compounds
Strongly polar, dipole dipole forces between molecules,
Way reactions do carbonyl compounds undergo?
Nucleophilic additions mostly, but can also be oxidised with acidified potassium dichromate and H+ for aldehydes
What are the results of the felhings and tollens tests?
For aldehydes a brick red precipitate is formed in the felhings test and a silver mirror is formed in the tollens test.
Ketones show no change
Carboxylic acids react with what to form esters?
Alcohols
What is the real name of glycerol?
Propane-1,2,3-triol
What are some of the uses of glycerol?
It is a solvent in many Medicines.
It is a solvent in foods.
It is a plasticiser in many materials.
