Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
(10 cards)
Principles of pressure and flow
Cardiac cycle definiton
one complete contraction and relaxation of the heart
Systole definition
contraction
Diastole definition
relaxation
What is happening on the left and right sides of the heart during cardiac cycle
Stages of the cardiac cycle
atrial systole, ventricular systole/atrial diastole, ventricular diastole
What events lead to the two major heart sounds
S1 “lubb”: occurs at the beginning of a ventricular stroke; caused by tensing of ventricular tissue
S2 “dupp”: occurs during isometric relaxation; caused by blood backflow quickly filling valve cusps
Valvular insufficiency definiton
any failure of a valve to prevent the backflow of blood
Valvular stenosis definition
cusps are stiffened and opening is constricted by scar tissue
Heart murmur definition
abnormal heart sound
