What is the first step in the Cardiovascular Examination Mini-CEX?
Hand wash/rub | Introduce Self | Explain Purpose | Obtain Consent | Position patient and expose as necessary
What should be assessed during the General Inspection?
Posture/Comfort | Body Habitus | Color | Respiratory distress | Dysmorphic features | Check Bedside Chart (obs/vitals)
What signs should be checked in Hands and Upper Limb?
Palmar crease pallor | Peripheral cyanosis | Clubbing | Xanthomata | Signs of Infective Endocarditis (Splinter Hemorrhages, Osler nodes, Janeway Lesions)
What vital signs should be performed?
Radial Pulse (Rate, Rhythm) | Resp Rate | Radio‐radial Delay | Knowledge of Radio‐femoral Delay | Knowledge of Blood Pressure measurement
What should students comment on regarding Blood Pressure?
Students should comment on, but are not required to perform, BP and Radio-femoral delay for this Mini-CEX
What should be examined in the Face – Eyes and Mouth?
Eyes: xanthelasma, conjunctival pallor, jaundice | Comments on mouth ex: central cyanosis, palate, teeth, gums
What should students comment on regarding mouth examination?
Students should comment on but not perform examination of the mouth in 2022.
What should be assessed in the Neck?
JVP (patient correctly positioned, measurement accuracy, appropriately reported) | Carotid pulse | Carotid Bruits
What should be inspected in the Chest?
Shape/Deformities | Implantable devices | Scars | Apex beat (visible/not visible)
What should be palpated in the Chest?
Apex beat (position and character) | Thrills (valve areas) | Heaves (parasternal/apex)
What areas should be auscultated in the Chest?
Mitral/Apex (bell and diaphragm) | Tricuspid | Left sternal margin | Pulmonary | Aortic
What further auscultation techniques should be performed?
Left Lateral – Apex beat, Mitral (bell) | Leaning forward, expiration – Aortic +/‐ Left sternal margin
What should be assessed in the Back?
Inspection of posterior chest | Palpation for sacral oedema | Percussion lung bases | Auscultation lung bases
What should be inspected in the Lower Limbs?
Inspect: varicose veins, colour and temperature of legs, trophic changes, ulceration, clubbing (toes), xanthomata
What should be palpated in the Lower Limbs?
Oedema | Calf tenderness | Peripheral pulses (excluding femoral pulse)
What should students mention regarding the Abdomen examination?
Students should mention, but not perform, what they would seek on Abdo examination: palpate for tenderness, masses, organomegaly, aortic aneurysm | Percuss for ascites | Auscultate for bruits

Thank patient and indicate they may redress | Hand rub/ hand wash | Comment on bedside tests e.g. ECG, fundoscopy, urinalysis
