Cardiovascular System Flashcards
(32 cards)
Components of the cardiovascular system
Blood, vessels and the heart.
Most abundant connective tissue
Fluid
Blood composition
55% plasma and 45% formed elements.
Blood colour
Bright red when oxygenated, dull maroon when deoxygenated.
Blood cell formation
Occurs in the red marrow of long, flat and irregular bones.
Thrombocytes
Also called platelets. Function to clot the blood. Require vitamin K to function.
What controls the heart rate?
The medulla oblongata.
Bradycardia
Heat rate slower than 50 beats per minute.
Tachycardia
Heart rate faster than 100 beats per minute.
Pulmonary vein
Only vein that carries oxygenated blood.
Heart conduction
SA node to AV node, down the bundle of HIS, through the left and right bundle branches and through the Perkinje fibers.
Skeletal muscle pump
Muscles squeeze the veins, pushing blood up. Valves prevent backflow.
Diastolic blood pressure
Pressure exerted between ventricular contractions.
Systolic blood pressure
Pressure exerted during ventricular contraction.
Circuits of the blood circulation
Systemic and pulmonary.
Hepatic portal system
Blood returning from the body is diverted to pick up nutrients from the digestive system.
Mass of blood
About 8% of the total body weight.
Leukocytes
White blood cells.
Granular leukocytes
Contain abundant granules in the cell cytoplasm. Includes neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils.
Agranular leukocytes
Less numerous type of white bood cell. Includes monocytes and lymphocytes.
Thrombocyte lifespan
7-10 days
Layers of the heart
Epicardium, myocardium and endocardium
Hemostasis
Process that stops bleeding and helps to keep blood within a damaged vessel.
Atrioventricular valves
Found between the atria and ventricles. Produce the “lub” sound.
