Cardiovascular system Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the three types of muscle?
- skeletal
- smooth
- cardiac
Define maximal exercise
Physical activity performed at the highest intensity level an individual can achieve. Pushes the body to its limit
Define submaximal exercise
Physical activity performed at an intensity level that is below maximum capacity of an individual. The body isn’t pushed to its absolute limit
What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
to deliver oxygen and nutrients and excrete waste products as well as regulating body temperature
True or False
The heart is a double-action pump
True
What are the two circuits that make up the dual-action pump?
- Pulmonary circuit
- Systemic circuit
Describe the pulmonary circuit
carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs and oxygenated blood back to the heart (LUNGS)
Describe the systemic circuit
carries oxygenated blood to the body tissues and deoxygenated back to the heart
Explain the conduction system in chronological order
SA node (sionatrial node) ~> AV node (Atrioventricular node) ~> Bundle of His ~> Purkinje fibres
What is the conduction system?
In short, the conduction system ensure that the heart beats in the right rhythm and pimps blood efficiently
What does the SA node do?
the heart’s natural pacemaker
it sends an electrical signal from the right atrium telling the heart to beat
What does the AV node do?
after the SA node causes the atria to contract, the AV node slows the signal down before sending it to the ventricles
the delay allows the atria to fully empty
What does the bundle of His do?
the electrical signal travels from the AV node to the bundle of His, which splits into two branches, one for each ventricle
What does the Purkinje fibers?
these fibers spread the electrical signals throughout the ventricles, causing them to contracts and pump blood out of the heart
