Caregiver - Infant Interaction^ Flashcards
(15 cards)
Whats is Caregiver - infant Interaction?
close two way bond
dependent on both for emotional security
Primary Attachment
first person to attach to
usually mother
Secondary Attachment
attach to other family members
father
formed at 18 months
Attachment Behaviours
proximity
separation anxiety
secure - base beh
Proximity Behaviour
stay close to the attached figure
Separation Anxiety
anxious when the attached figure leaves
Secure - Base Behaviour
making regular contact but can play by themselves
Reciprocity
how P interact and respond to beh
Alert Phases
- baby signal they are ready to interact
- mother responds 2/3 of time (Feldman & Eidelman)
- around 3 months the interaction becomes more frequent as B & M pay more attention to each other’s signals
Active Involvement
- Babies take active role in the attachment process
- B and primary caregivers take turns to start interactions
Interactional Synchrony
temporal co-coordination of social beh
mirror beh and emotions
more mirroring = better emotional relationship/ development
Meltzoff & Moore
- observe and film in.sync. in babies
- adult does one of three expressios or gestures
- baby’s movement is more likely to mirror adult’s
Filmed Observations
lab - can control distractions
observations are recorded and analysed by more than one person
- establish inter-rater reliability
No Demand Characteristics
baby don’t know they are being observed so no demand characteristics
data = good reliability and validity
Difficulty Observing
hard to interpret baby’s beh
lack co-ordination and are almost immobile
- hard to determine what they mean
- if its triggered or random
Developmental Importance
observing beh does not tell the d.i.
Feldman
- in.sync. and reciprocity are not useful in understanding child development
- don’t tell us the purpose of these beh
can’t be certain if they are important for child’s beh
VS Developmental Importance
evidence to suggest that early interactions are important
Isabella et al
- in. sync. predicted the development of good quality attachment
caregive- infant attachment is important
Research Support for IS
IS imp for dev of CII
Isabella et al
analysed 30 mothers and babies
high levels of S associated with better quality mother-baby attachment
