The Hierarchy of Victimization
Ideal Victim: weak, vulnerable, innocent (women)
Non-Ideal Victim: young men, homeless, addicted, car owners who don’t lock their cars
Types of Victimology
Conservative strand, liberal strand, and radical-critical strand
Conservative Strand
4 components:
•Crime: distinct problem with focus on visible forms of victimization
•Holding people accountable
•Self reliance
•Retributive justice (punishment > rehabilitation)
Liberal Strand
- Extends on conservative strand by incorporating more types of victimization (corporate)
- Concerned with making the victim whole again (restitution, meditation, reconciliation)
Radical-Critical Strand
- Human suffering (poverty, unemployment, inadequate healthcare systems) create the social issues that make up the crime problem
- CJS: worsens the issue (police rule-breaking and political agendas)
Social Variables in Victimization
Social Class:
•Poor
Age:
•Children under 1: most likely to be murdered
•Older: legally not prominent (high non reporting
•Young: low priority
Gender:
•Men: violent attacks (by strangers/other men)
•Women: home victimization, harassment, sexual violence
Ethnicity:
•Minority groups: racial violence/harassment and police failure
