CBT therapy
type of talk therapy that focuses on how a person’s thought patterns influence behavior
Cognitive restructuring
Process of identifying and changing harmful thought patterns
Stimulus control
Phenomenon in which a subject behaves in one way in the presence of a stimulus and another in the absence of a stimulus
Sleep restriction
Technique used to treat insomnia that restricts the amount of time spent in bed to make sleep periods consolidated and predictable
NREM stage 3 sleep
deep sleep that occurs 30-45 minutes after falling asleep
delta waves
- present in NREM stage 3 sleep
- aka slow brain waves (low-frequency, high-amplitude)
beta waves
- Most common daytime brain wave
- Associated with alertness, concentration, problem-solving, and other engaging activities
- Exist during eyes-open wakefulness and reappear during REM sleep
- Higher frequency than the other waves
alpha waves
- Displayed when one is tired but awake with closed eyes (usually during relaxation)
- Can be associated with daydreaming and meditation
- Exist during eyes-closed wakefulness and reappear during REM sleep
- Lower frequency than beta waves and higher frequency than theta and delta waves
theta waves
- Displayed when one is drowsy, has just fallen asleep, or is in a light sleep
- Also associated with deep relaxation
- Appear during NREM sleep stages 1 and 2
- lower frequency than beta and alpha waves and higher frequency than delta waves

test/record of brain activity produced by electroencephalography
sleep apnea
Sleep-related breathing disorder during which breathing stops and starts periodically while sleeping
- Leads to reduced sleep quality
- can cause daytime tiredness
barbiturate
Class of medications that produce drowsiness
- Often used to sedate patients
- can cause excessive sleepiness
narcolepsy
Sleep disorder that causes extreme drowsiness during the daytime
- Individuals with narcolepsy can find it difficult to stay awake for long periods
