Cartilage and Bone Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are isogenous groups?
multiple cells in a lacuna after chondrocyte undergoes mitosis
What are the three types of cartilage and what fibers are in their ground substance?
Hyaline: Type 2 collagen
Elastic: Type 2 collagen + elastic fibers
Fibrocartilage: Type 1 collagen
What are the major components of bone matrix?
Osteoid (Type I collagen, GAGs, PGs)
Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2)
What are the cells of bone?
Osteoprogenitor cell
Osteoblast (secretes bone matrix around itself and becomes an osteocyte)
Osteocyte
Osteoclast
What are the layers (superficial to deep) of the diaphysis and epiphysis of long bones?
Diaphysis: periosteum, compact bone, medulla
Epiphysis: articular cartilage, cancellous bone, medulla
What does compact bone have that cancellous bone lacks?
Haversian systems
Which cells maintain the bone matrix? How do they communicate?
osteocytes, gap junctions between cytoplasmic processes that course through canaliculi
Osteoclasts make contact with bone surfaces via their _____ and create a depression called a ____.
ruffled border, Howship’s lacuna
Which type of bone undergoes endochondral formation? Intramembranous?
long and short; flat
