Case 1 - Mitesh Questions Flashcards
(6 cards)
what are the 6 processes involved after a thin scar has formed in healing by secondary intention?
1) clot dries and forms a scab
2) scab contracts
3) granulation tissue forms and contracts
4) epidermis regenerates
5) fibrous repair of dermis
6) Scar matures
what are myofibroblasts and their function?
myofibroblasts contracts and helps close the wound
they are hybrid b/w smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts
what local factors might have been responsible for a lack of union following a bone fracture?
movement of a person
infection
poor blood supply
foreign bodies
list the stages of fracture healing
1) haematoma formation
2) granulation tissue formation
3) soft callous formation
4) a bony callous formation (woven bone)
5) Lamellar (harder) bone
6) Bone remodelling
describe what is meant by the term “peripheral sensitisation” as it occurs following an injury and explain the mechanisms involved
“peripheral sensitisation” - when afferent nociceptor (pain receptor) activity is increased
mechanisms involved:
chemicals released by tissue damage and inflammatory mediators are recruited/released to the site
these mediators activate peripheral nociceptors and decrease the threshold for activation
what should be used for mild pain and what should be used for severe pain?
mild: non opioid, e.g paracetamol with anti-inflammatory
severe: morphine with anti-inflammatory
