Case 1 - Panic Disorder Flashcards
Week 3 (6 cards)
During his first panic attack, what did José (like many panic disorder cases), think he was experiencing?
a heart attack.
The panic case of José illustrates that experiencing a panic attack often leads to what?
agoraphobia, or the distrust and fear with the arousal of the SNS
When José had a panic attack at night during sleep, what was the first thing he was recommended to do?
try getting up and carrying on with things you would normally do as well as trying breathing techniques and mm relaxation, also reminded himself the symptoms he experienced were not putting him in danger.
Describe the four steps the social worker took to help José overcome his panic attacks.
(1) training in relaxation and breathing techniques, (2) changing his cognitive misinterpretations of panic sensations, (3) repeated exposure to sensations of panic under controlled conditions, and (4) repeated practice in situations that José was avoiding or apprehensive about
What were each of the interoceptive exposure exercises that were part of José’s treatment?
whole body tension, breathe through straw, shake head form side to side, place head btwn legs and then lift, stare at spot on wall, hold breath, run in place, hyperventilate.
How did José’s avoidance of going outside by himself contribute to his panic disorder?
he was diagnosed with agoraphobia which indicated that he was worried about getting more panic attacks and thus avoided going into places where he might get one, and then bc of anticipatory anxiety he is more likely to get a panic attack when he leaves the house.
