case studies Flashcards

1
Q

strengths of case studies

A
  • in depth nature of case studies allows rich data to be collected from the individual making it valid than other methods that only gather data on what they are looking for and allows conclusions to be made.
  • triangulation allows the researchers to combine interviews, observation to gather valid qualitative data and brain scanning for reliable data.
  • case studies look at cases on rare individuals so knowing a lot about the case allows knowledge to be built.

Q

weaknesses of case studies

A
  • 1 or more researchers study the individual in the case study, so bias is not in the data recorded but there can be subjectivity in the data gathered and findings can be affected by the researcher’s input.
  • case study is done on an individual or a few people so findings from the study cannot be generalized to be representative of the target population. Any anomalies in data gathered would be unreliable and not limited to the sample size
