Regional Scale - West Africa
On a regional scale
Lagos is the main financial centre for the whole of West Africa.
The Port of Lagos is Nigeria’s leading port and one of the largest and busiest ports in Africa. It is split into three sections: Lagos port
in the main channel near Lagos Island; Apapa port which houses the container terminal; and Tin Can port. The port allows businesses in Western Africa to import and export goods from around the world. In 2018
Lagos airport lies northwest of the city. Also known as the Murtala Muhammed Airport
it is also a major hub for flights within West Africa and between the sub-regions. The airport processes approximately 6.5 million passengers each year; domestic passengers account for 56% of all traffic.
Many businesses in Western Africa are attracted to the city due to the advantage of being close to the things they need such as materials
workers and transport.
Another attraction is that Lagos is well connected to West Africa by highways; it is the endpoint of three Trans-African Highway routes
National Scale- Nigeria
Lagos is important on a national scale as it has 16 universities and higher education organisations. The University of Lagos is the best university in Nigeria with over 55
000 students and 4
Lagos generates a quarter of Nigeria’s GDP. Most commercial and financial business is carried out in the central business district situated on the island. This is also where most of the country’s commercial banks
financial institutions and major corporations are headquartered.
Lagos is also the major Information Communications and Telecommunications (ICT) hub. It contains 80% of Nigeria’s industry.
Worldwide/ International Scale
Lagos is the home to Nigeria’s movie industry
Nollywood. It is the second biggest movie industry in the world after Hollywood. Many films that are shot in Lagos are produced in over 300 languages which means they can reach a wider audience.
Finally
Lagos is important on an international scale as it has lots of branches of multinational global companies located there such as Nestle
Migration to Lagos has changed it beyond recognition. The city of Lagos covers an immense area
over 1000km*. With e population continuing to grow
Lagos was originally a small fishing village where the Awori group of the Yoruba people lived. Today
it has a very diverse lation due to migration from other parts of Nigeria and surrounding countries. The Yoruba are still the dominant ethnic group
While there are many millionaires in Lagos
about 66% of the population live in slums. The city has been dubbed the
“mega-city of slums,” with millions living in and around the Tons with no access to roads
clean water
International migration has brought a different aspect of character to the city. Many international migrants live in private gated communities such as Banana Island. “In addition to Nigeria’s wealthiest people

Lagos has a big film industry
which produces popular ‘Nollywood’ films. It is second largest movie production industry with around 2

but many people still retain their traditional dress and ways of life
About two-thirds of Lagos’s population live in slums (illegal
overcrowded housing in urban areas. For those who can afford proper housing it’s a mix of old and new - some of the old colonial buildings remain
Street parties
pool parties and nightclubbing are all popular leisure activities for the wealthy in Lagos. There are also many festivals held throughout the year for example Lagos International Jazz Festival
Shopping is also popular in Lagos. There is a wide variety of different types of shops from big sprawling markets specialising in different products
small shops and larger shopping centres or ‘malls’. The upmarket
