Amarna Letters

A

discovered in 1888-89 mention the apiru (Habiru, Hapiru)
sparked debate over links to “Hebrews” in Canaanite conquest. 380 tabs, 16 mention marauding mercenaries. snap link - name, location, chronology. But other ANE texts mention it. too wide, not an ethinic group. snap rejection. Hebrew could be part of larger designation by Canaanites for social outcasts.

24
Q

Significance of Merneptah Stela

A

extra-biblical text, or “Israel Stella”
earliest mention of “Israel” not bible
disc. Flinders Petrie 1896 in Valley of the Kings in Thebes, pub. 1897
mostly victories over Libya, but last line, “Israel is laid waste, his seed is not”
Preceding are Canaan city states: Ashkelon, Gezer, Yanoam. maybe city state for Israel or people/ethinic. Or parallel to Canaan before the three. plains vs. hills, or equivalents?
2 ?’s - how long? how did get there?
-no grounds for denying link between Mern and biblical Isreal, inconvenient for minimalist position.
