Explanation to the patient?

A

‘Today ive been asked to put a catheter in for you, this will allow your bladder to be emptied during your surgery and will also enable the urine output to be measured accurately.

Details of the task? (after the explanation)

A

The procedure itself will involve handling your external genitalia, and using sterile technique i’ll give you a clean, add gel down below to make it more comfortable for you and then add the slim tube. It will take about 10 minutes to do and will stay in as long as required after the surgery. It will be removed as soon as we possibly can and if at any point you want to stop the procedure just let me know. there is a small chance of trauma or risk of infection, however, using sterile technique will make the chances of any complications very small. Have you got any questions and are happy to continue?

Equipment? (woman same but don’t need gauze)

  • catheter pack
  • sterile gloves
  • saline
  • instilla gel
  • drainage bag
  • apron
    catheter (save sticker)
    Gauze

Male procedure?

A
  • clean the trolley and put everything. open catheter pack and pour saline into dish
  • open catheter bag, gel, and catheter onto sterile field
  • put sterile gloves on and put sheet over penis
  • clean penis using gauze and cotton wool
  • add gel and take pressure off the syringe
  • say youd give gel 3-5 mins and change gloves
  • prepare catheter and push it in using the gauze to the bifurcation
  • add saline to inflate
  • check its secure and add the catheter bag and check for presence of urine. place catheter bag at side of bed
  • clean gel and equipment away

What do you document at the end of the procedure?

A
  • add catheter sticker

- note residual volume and complete patients fluid balance, check patient is okay

What is the difference between men and women?

A
  • women require less gel
  • 3/4 down not to the bifurcation (about 5cm)
  • no gauze required for cleaning
