A

these were religious houses where monks lived. however they offered employment to local communities and also healthcare for the sick, furthermore they were centres of learning.

how did the catholic church have so much power?

A

• people were taught that the only way to get into heaven was if the roman catholic church let them, and the idea of going to hell was terrifying to all
• they made peasants work for free on church land in an attempt to win salvation
• people paid 10% of what they earned a year to the church (tithes), failure to pay this would lead to their would going to hell
• you had to pay for baptisms and to be buried on holy ground (if you did not do this, your soul would go to hell)
• cathedrals were vast and grand, they could be seen from miles around which reminded everyone of the huge power the catholic church had
• if you died building a cathedral your soul would be guaranteed a place in heaven
