Name some examples of natural causes that some people thought lead to the black plague

A
  • Miasma - the waste and poor sanity conditions in towns. Smell of waste would attract rats- rats had bubonic plague
  • Inbalance of the 4 humours - medieval doctors believed that illnesses ( black plague ), were caused by the imbalanced of the four humours. these were black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood. all of these humours had to be equal. gor examp,e if the doctor thought they had excess blood they would have blood taken out so that it wold be eqaul

what are some examples of supernatural causes

A
  • alighnment of planets (astology) - they thought that if the enlighnment of llanets make the plague
  • god was the cause - some people thought that god was punishing them for their sins so some oaryed to god to let it stop. some people even slapped themselves with whips to ask for forgiveness ( trying to say sorry). these people were called flagellents.
  • bad spirits - they thought they were possessed by demons. some people would drill a hole in their head to release the bad spirits that were belived to have caused the plague. some doctors burst the buboes of patiengs with bubonic plague. there is actually some evidance that this did increase chamces of survival.

  • pop buboes although it did increase the chances of surviving

A

Hot and sweaty, fever, muscles and bones ache, red and black rash, breath smells, sneezing and coughing, throat swollen, smelly black puss, dehydration

What was the most dangerous plague

A

Pneumonic and septicemic = 100% DEATH! bubonic plague only= some people were extremely lucky for their buboes to burst which meant that they lived. But it was very small chance

A

They are swollen bumps often on the armpit or groin that were in the bubonic plague

Whipping yourself, drinking vinegar and mercury, lighting a fire and spraying perfume for no bad smells, plucking a chicken and strapping it to your boils, killing a toad and drying it and putting it on your boils

A

Moving away if you thought the plague was coming, popping the boils, locking plague victims in their home, killing animals that could have it, avoiding contact with people

What was the consequences in britain for villages

A
  • not enough peasants to do jobs like servants so servants would want more wages because not many other peasants are doing it and also they were moving around the country because they were needed around the country
  • everyone is angry because the king passed laws to stop wages going up - this could be a key cause for the Peasants’ revolt of 1381
  • farm land and farm animals shortages because people were dying - this means food shortages
