The Compromise of 1850 which consisted of 5 bills, the most controversial of which were the Fugitive Slave Act which made officials in North States who failed to return runaway slaves liable to be fined. Maine’s southern borders became the dividing line.

The Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which many felt to be binding, thus it greatly upset Americans, and pro and anti slavery groups moved to Kansas to swing the vote.
