Causes of identity conflicts
Nationalism- strong devotion/identity with country…e.g. Scottish national party
Regionalism-““region…e.g. Mouvement région Savoie, for the coming together of Savoie and Haute Savoie, used to make up region if savoy
Localism-““local area…Ullswater in Lake District, conflict over development of holiday chalet
Ethnicity
Part if your identity,
Cultural and religious background that has been passed down
Ethnic group: group that shares the same cultural and religious values and traditions
What causes ethnic conflicts
Ethic groups want more political power
An ethnic group thinks they’re superior to another
Example: Rwanda, long history of conflict between the Tutsi and Hutu groups
Led to genocide in 1994, 800,000 killed in space of 100 days (mostly Tutsis)
Culture
How you live your life
Language, food, customs, beliefs, values, clothing, traditions etc
Linked with gender, ethnicity, religion, location, age etc
Causes of cultural conflict
People may not agree with/understand other cultures
Example: whale meat is traditional food in Japan, others are worried about extinction of whales
Resources
Assets/necessities that benefit a country
Causes of resource conflict
Competing for same resources limited in supply/availability
Examples: territory - fighting over authority of land, e.g Falkland Islands, south Atlantic Ocean, falklands war (1982) Argentina and U.K.
Water- unfair distribution, e.g. Upstream Nile, (Egypt, Sudan) more water, downstream (Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania) get less.
Buildings-dome of the rock in Jerusalem, Muslim built, on site of Jewish temple
Oil- Russia and Norway over polar oil rights for over 40 yrs-arctic ocean divided into zones
Ideology
Set of ideas about how society should be
Politics, economic system, education, welfare, health care, justice system, environment
Causes of ideology conflict
Different ideas result in conflicts
E.g. N Korea (authoritarian gov) and S Korea (democratic gov), long history of conflict
