Q

What was Lend Lease?

A

By 1940, President Roosevelt believed that isolationism was harming U.S. interests. As Britain struggled to afford American war supplies, he addressed the public in a fireside chat, calling the USA the “arsenal of democracy” and proposing to lend goods instead of selling them. This led to the Lend-Lease Act in March 1941, allowing the U.S. to lend or lease war materials to nations vital to its defense—Britain received $7 billion in support under this program.

Pearl Harbour

A

In the 1930s, tensions rose between Japan and the USA due to Japan’s expansion in Asia. After Japan invaded China and allied with Germany and Italy, the U.S. responded with sanctions and stopped exporting oil and steel. Japan, seeing no resolution, launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, killing around 2,400 Americans. This led the U.S. to enter World War II.
