A

Slave trade was banned in D.C.
Fugitive Slave Law was passed- allowed special gov. officials to arrest any person accused of being a runaway slave.
Popular Sovereignty- voting used to decide whether or not slavery should be permitted or not after the state requested admission into the Union

Uncle Tom’s Cabin

A

1852- This is a book about a kind, enslaved man who is abused by a cruel man, Simon Legree. Harriet Beacher Stowe wrote this book which expressed to people that slavery was not just a political issue, but a human, moral problem. Southerners claimed it to be a propaganda but it brought the issues of slavery to the attention of the Northerners.

Kansas-Nebraska Act

A

1854- Senator Stephen Douglas wanted a railroad built from Illinois through the Nebraska Territory to the Pacific Coast. Southerners objected b/c the Missouri Compromise cut off this land from slavery. So, Douglas suggested that slavery in the new territories be decided by popular sovereignty. On the other hand, the Northerners were outraged by Douglas’s actions; they saw his doings as betrayal. After much debate, the act was passed.

Bleeding Kansas

A

1855- White citizens were left to decide whether or not Kansa would be free. Both Northerners and Southerners rushed to Kansas within weeks after The bill was passed. Thousands of Missourians rushed to Kansas to illegally vote in the election of select a territorial legislature. Kansas was declared a slave state. The Northerners opposed this and fought a lot.

Dred Scott Case

A

1857- Dred Scott was a slave who escaped his master and traveled to a free state. When Scott tried to sue for his freedom. Southerners claimed that he could not sue b/c he was a black slave. Scott remained a slave under Missouri law. Congress declared that they could not ban slavery in any territory and that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.

Harper’s Ferry (John Brown) CONFLICT!!!

A

1859- Brown raided Harpers Ferry in Virginia in order to steal weapons to fight against Slavery. Brown was wounded and captured. The Court found Brown guilty and sentenced him to death.

1860- The Crittenden Compromise was an unsuccessful proposal introduced by Kentucky Senator John J. Crittenden. It aimed to resolve the U.S. secession crisis of 1860–1861 by addressing the grievances that led the slave states of the United States to contemplate secession from the United States.

Fort Sumter

A

1861- the battle at Fort Sumter marked the beginning of the Civil War. Fort Sumter’s commander would not surrender, so authorities decided to starve the troops. Lincoln feared that sending troops would make more states secede, so, he sent the troops food, but no weapons. Fort Sumter was eventually captured.
