In 1859 John Brown caused a slave revolt and attacked the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, VA.

U.S. Fort in confederate territory.
After the south seceded, the confederates cut off supplies to the fort. Lincoln sent in an unarmed supply boat, and the confederates attacked.
