Civil War
The bitter conflict fought from 1861 to 1865 between the states that remained in the Union and the states that seceded and formed the Confederacy.
North
The region of the United States in the mid-1800s that included the states in New England, in the Middle Atlantic section, and around the Great Lakes. This region had many cities, factories, and railroads. Most of its workers were free.
South
The region of the United States in the mid-1800s that included the states south of the Ohio River and latitude 36 30 degrees North. This region had few factories or large cities. Most people lived on farms. African slaves worked on plantations.
Union
The United States as one country; during the Civil War, the government and the armies of the states that chose to remain a part of the United States.
slave state
a state in which it was legal to own slaves
free state
a state in which is was NOT legal to own slaves
abolitionist
a person who wanted to end, or abolish, slavery
Underground Railroad
a system in which abolitionists secretly helped escaping slaves reach freedom. This was not underground, nor was it a railroad.
secede
to officially withdraw from a government or country
Confederacy
the nation formed by the 11 states (in order of secession - South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee) that left the Union
Henry Clay
U.S. senator from Kentucky who came up with the idea of the Missouri Compromise
Frederick Douglas
Former slave who was a writer, editor, and leading abolitionist.
Harriet Tubman
Abolitionist who escaped from slavery in 1849 and became a conductor on the Underground Railroad. She led more than 300 slaves to freedom.
Abraham Lincoln
The 16th President of the United States , 1861-1865, who led the United States during the Civil War.
Missouri Compromise
Law passed in 1820 dividing the Louisiana Territory into areas prohibiting slavery and areas allowing slavery.
Fugitive Slave Law
Law passed by Congress in 1850 that said escaped slaves had to be returned to their owners.
Compromise of 1850
Law passed by Congress under which California was admitted to the Union as a free state and the Fugitive Slave Law was passed.
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Law passed in 1854 allowing these two territories to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery.
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which exposed the cruelties of slavery to wide audience before the Civil War.
