Causes of WW1 (MANIAC) Flashcards
(6 cards)
MILITARISM
European nations were building up their military power and weapons.
There was an arms race, especially between Germany and Britain.
Countries believed that having a strong military would help them solve conflicts quickly.
Alliances
European powers formed rival alliances
These alliances meant that if one country was attacked, others would be pulled into the conflict, turning a small war into a world war.
Nationalism
Nations had strong pride in their culture, military, and power.
Nationalism increased rivalries and tensions, especially in the Balkans.
Imperialism
European powers competed for colonies and resources in Africa and Asia.
This created tension and rivalry between countries like Britain, France, and Germany.
Assassination
The spark of WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist (Gavrilo Princip) in June 1914.
Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia, leading to a chain reaction of war declarations due to alliances.
Crisis
A series of crises before 1914, such as the Moroccan Crises and Balkan Wars, increased tension and distrust among European powers.
