CBC Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is in a CBC? (9 items)
WBC, RBC, Hgb, Hct, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, Plt
WBC norm value?
4-10,000/mm3
RBC norm value?
3.5-5.0 mil/mm3
Hgb norm value?
12-17 grams%
Hct norm percentage?
36-52%
MCV norm value?
82-94 fl
MCH norm value?
27-31 pg
MCHC norm percentage?
32-35%
RDW norm percentage?
10-12.5 %
Plt. norm value?
150,000-400,000 /mm3
What can increased RBC levels indicate?
dehydration or bone marrow disorders like polycythemia vera
What does RDW stand for?
Red cell distribution width
What happens to RDW’s in anemia?
They increase
RBC variation should be within what percentage?
11.5% - 15%
A high RDW test means what?
the red blood cells measured varied widely in size.
Abnormal RDW (red cell distribution width) can be associated with what pathologies?
anemias, liver disease and a deficiency in folate.
RBC elevated over the norm of 3.5-5.0 million/ mm3 can indicate?
Dehydration due to less vascular volume or bone marrow disorders like polycythemia vera which is an overproduction of RBC’s.
RBC numbers lower than 3.5 million /mm3 can be an indicator of?
anemias, RBC hemolysis and hemoglobinopathies.
How do we diagnose anemias?
We use a CBC combined with Fe studies to diagnose anemias.
What is the normal Hgb/Hct ratio?
1:3 for example 10g = 30%, 12 g = 36%, 15g = 45%
How do you measure RBC size?
Wintrobes classification of anemia by evaluation of mean corpuscle volume or MCV.
RBC that are microcytic are?
A small cell with MCV <80fL
RBC’s that are normocytic are?
A normal size with MCV 80-96fL
RBC’s that are macrocytic are?
A large size with MCV>96fL
