what is the first stage in CBT?

A

cognitive preparation - working with trained therapists, the offender reflects what triggers their anger and how they could have reacted differently.

what is the second stage of CBT?

A

skill acquisition - offenders are taught a range of behavioural techniques to help them cope more effectively. e.g. counting to ten when in a stressful event. this promotes calmness rather than aggression

what is the third stage of CBT?

A

a therapist devises a situation where the offender is able to demonstrate their skills they have been taught. this can be done by reconstructing past events when they lost control.

is CBT effective?

A

this is not an effective treatment, it can actually make aggressive people and murderers actually make premeditated attacks on people as they can be more manipulative thanks to the training. 30% of people also drop out.

Ireland (2000) found that 50 people on CALM 92% rated themselves as less angry on at least 1 angry behaviour out of 29. however 8% deteriorated
