CBT in treating major depression Flashcards
(6 cards)
one form of CBT
MBCT, mindfulness based cognitive therapy
what does MBCT do?
encourage clients to develop different relationships w/ the negative feelings. to treat them as passing events rather than as the beginning of a trend- minimise their significance.
what is a support for this therapy
Ma et al 2004, MBCT for clinical depression can reduce the likelihood of further clinical periods of depression by 42-62%.
research has shown that MBCT
offers a promising, cost-efficient psychological approach to preventing relapse / recurrence in recovered depressed patients
what is the issue with treatment research?
tend to ignore those who drop out / biased. Cromby et al- not carefully selected participants not representative of those with major depression.
why are drugs chosen maybe?
psychological therapies involve weeks and are very expensive compared to drugs.
