What is a classic sign of parotid tumours?
Deflection of the ear outwards
What signs may indicate a parotid tumour is malignant?
VIIth nerve palsy Rapid growth Hard, fixed mass Pain But 80% are pleomorphic adenomas (mostly benign)
How do you treat parotid tumours?
Superficial parotidectomy
Radiotherapy if malignant
What commonly causes acute salivary gland swellings?
Mumps and HIV
What causes recurrent unilateral pain and swelling?
Stone - pain and swelling on eating, red, tender gland
What causes a fixed salivary gland swelling?
Tumours Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia Sarcoid Amyloid Idiopathic
What are the main pairs of salivary glands?
- Parotid
- Submandibular
- Sublingual
