Cell Bio Topic Test Flashcards
(16 cards)
Cell theory
- All living things are made up of one or more cells
- All cells come from other cells by diffusion
- The cell is fundamental unit of life
Three Domains of Life
- Prokaryotes: Bacteria + Archaea
2. Eukaryotes: Eukarya
Cell Differentiation
allows for emergent properties in multicellular organisms
Differentiation
process of becoming a specialized cell
Stem cells
- have not differentiated
- not assigned a specific job in the organism
* But has the ability to differentiate along different pathways*
Stem cell characteristics
unspecialized- divide rapidly
Stem cells- Pluripotent
able to make any body cell (3-14 days of an embryo)
Stem cells- Multipotent
able to make a range of cells with a particular tissue type (after 14 days of an embryo)
How are stem cells obtained?
- Vitro Fertilization
- Therapeutic cloning
- Blood marrow transplant
- Umbilical cord
Big picture of Stem Cells
stem cells have the capacity to divide and remain undifferentiated
Phospholipids
type of liquid made from two fatty acid chain tails attached to a phospholipid group head
Phospholipid group head +
Phospholipid group tail
head-polar and hydrophilic
tail- non polar and hydrophobic
Phospholipids in membranes
acts as barrier to most substances, helping control what enters/exits
Cholesterol in cell membrane
- controls membrane fluidity
2. Keeps membrane stable at normal body temp- without it cells would burst
Proteins in cell membrane
- makes up 45% mass of membrane (25-75% depending on cell type)
Cells made up of Eukaryotic Cells
- Animal
- Plant
- Fungi
- Protista ( one-celled organism)
