Cell Biology Flashcards
(21 cards)
Plasma Membrane
Protects the cell from the surrounding environment.
Selectively permeable
Barrier that allows certain substances cross but excludes others.
What is the Fluid Mosaic Model.
A plasma membrane that is fluid with proteins in it.
Cytoskeleton
Is made up of large filaments of single proteins.
Helps with shape, cell mobility and movement of intracellular.
Microfilaments
(Actin)
Help with shape and crawling
Inter cellular trafficking
Cyctokinsis
Micro tubules
Help with movement
Intercellular trafficking
Mitosis (nuclear division)
Cytoplasm
Everything with in the plasma membrane.
Cystosol
Just the water in the cell
(Solvent)
Ribosome
Site of translation/ protein synthesis
Central dogma of molecular biology
Describes the flow of genetic information from DNA transcribed into RNA then translated into proteins
Nucleus
Central organelle contains the cells DNA
Nuclear pore
Small protein lined openings found scattered throughout the nuclear envelops
Nuclear envelope
Membrane surrounds the nucleus consisting double lipid bilayer
Nuclear lamina
Filament proteins called lamis, which provide structural support and maintain the shape of the nucleus.
Relate the ER to the nucleus.
The ER is connected to the outer layer of the nuclear envelope.
What’s the difference between rough ER and smooth ER
Rough ER has ribosomes.
Golgi Body
Series of flattened membranes bind sacs that function in modifying , sorting, packaging , transporting proteins and lipids
Lysosomes
Contain variety of digestive enzymes that break down waste materials
Vessicle
Membrane bound sac that transports and stores substances with in a cell.
Mitochondria
Generate ATP and have a double membrane
Peroxisomes
Sequesters peroxide and protects the cells from damage from free oxygen radicals.
