Cell Cycle Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are the phases of mitosis? What occurs in each one?
Prophase - chromosomes start to condense, nucleolus dissolves
(Prometaphase) - nuclear envelope breaks down
Metaphase - chromosomes align at the metaphase plate, spindles attach to kinetochore
Anaphase - sister chromatids are pulled apart
Telophase - formation of two new nuclei, chromosomes begin to condense, spindle broken down
What is G0 phase?
It is an optional quiescence phase.
What is G1?
Replication of organelles, mRNA produced and some proteins are produced ready for replication.
What is the S phase?
DNA replication. Finishes when all chromosomes have been replicated.
What is the G2 phase?
Cell continues to grow. Prepares for mitosis, produces proteins e.g. spindle.
What is a mitogen?
A substance which stimulates or induces mitosis.
