Cell Division Flashcards
(14 cards)
Chromatin
Unwound DNA looks like spaghetti
Chromatid
Condensed DNA looks like elbow pasta
Chromosome
2 identical sister chromatids joined at centromere. Centromere little dot. Looks like an X
Why do cells divide
RGR
Reproduction Growth Repair
How does the cell know how to divide
DNA has instructions for all the cell’s activity
3 parts
IMC
Interphase Mitosis Cytokenisis
Interphase what happens
Cell doubles in size, DNA replicates, Organelles double in number
Prophase what happens
DNA forms chromosomes, spindle forms, centrioles moved toward opposite poles, Nuclear membrane begins to disappear
Metaphase what happens
Nucleus has disappeared completely, chromosomes in the middle of cell spindle fibers attach centromeres
Anaphase what happens
Centro-meters divide, chromatins separate and move to opposite poles
Telephase what happens
Nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes and they unwind, cleavage furrow forms
Cytokinesis what happens
Cytoplasm divides one cell becomes two identical cells
Centrioles and Chromatin
Organelles needed for division
Strands of DNA
Chromatid and spindle fibers
Condensed DNA
Attach to centromere for division
