Cell Division + Bianry Fission Flashcards
(10 cards)
1
Q
What are the three factors effecting binary fission?
A
- warm
- moist
- pleanty of nutrients
2
Q
What is binary fission?
A
- the process of prokaryotic organisms (bacteria) reproducing
3
Q
What is the difference between m,enosis and mitosis?
A
- meiosis produces gametes (haploid cells) mitosis produces diploid cells
- meiosis divides twice , mitosis only divides once
4
Q
What is interphase and cytokenesis?
A
Interphase: duplicating the chromosomes (which form an x shape)
Cytokenisis: when cell membrane and cytoplasm divide
5
Q
What is differentiation?
A
When a cell changes to become specialised for its function
6
Q
What are undifferentiated cells called?
A
Stem cells
7
Q
How are muscle cells adapted for contraction?
A
- cells are long
- have lots of mitochondria to generate energy
8
Q
How are phloem and xylem specialised for transporting substances?
A
- form tube shapes
- xylem is hollow in the centre
- phloem has minimal sub cellular structures so stuff can flow through them
9
Q
What is therapeutic cloning?
A
- using embryonic stem cells to cure disease or replace faulty cells
10
Q
What is a chromosome?
A
A coiled up length of DNA
