Cell Energy Part 1 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Where does most of the energy used by life on earth come from?
Sunlight
What is a food chain?
Simplified model that shows a single path for energy flow through an ecosystem
What is a tropic level?
Each step in a food chain or food web
What do the arrows represent in a food chain?
Flow of energy
Autotrophs
Organisms that produce glucose (food) from inorganic or sunlight
Autotrophs: examples and how they obtain their energy
Plants, some bacteria: inorganic molecules or sunlight
Autotroph: location in a food chain
Producers (directly after the sun)
Heterotrophs
Organisms that consume other organisms for their energy
Heterotrophs: where do they get their energy from?
From the food ingest
Heterotrophs: examples
Animals and fungi
Heterotrophs: location and a food chain
All steps after the producers
Metabolism
All of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism
ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate.
Structure of ATP
A nucleic acid composed of a single nucleotide; the nuclear tide is made up of ribosomes (sugar), adenine (base), and three phosphates
What cellular process are fueled by ATP
All metabolism processes; active cell transport, cell division
How does ATP release its energy?
By breaking a bond between two of the three phosphate molecules that form ATP
