Cell Membrane Flashcards
(11 cards)
Glycoproteins function
Similar to glycolioids….
Allows communication between cells, identification, receptor sites for hormones
Glycolipid functions
Receptor sites for hormones, identification- (for either self or non self )
Allows communication with other cells
Channel proteins function
Allows molecules to diffuse in and our of the cell
Phospholipid bilayer function
Forms the majority of the cell. Separates the inside from the outside
Cholesterol function
Helps proved structure, maintains fluidity when cold and helps hold together when hot. Allows more temp
Membrane proteins function
helps to give the membrane a little bit of structure, site for different reactions inside the cell
Cell membrane function overall
DOES NOT GIVE STRUCTURE
control entry and exit of substances
Separate from outside.
Fluid mosaic model what does ‘fluid’ and ‘ mosaic’ refer to
‘Fluid’ movement of the phospholipid belayer, rotate on axis and swap with others nearby.
‘Mosaic’ not structured arrangement
THESE MOVEMENTS INCREASE THE FLUIDITY OF THE MEMBRANE
3 main components of the cell membrane?
Phospholipid
Protein
Cholesterol
Structure of a phospholipid
Polar head - choline and phosphate
Glycerol backbone
Fatty acid chains
Explain double bonds in the fatty acid chains
Cause kinks allowing the phospholipid hydrophobic tails to join together
