Cell Membrane/Wall Flashcards
(22 cards)
What’s another name for cell membrane?
Plasma membrane
Do all organelles have a membrane?
They may or may not have a membrane
What 2 things make up a double layer of the cell membranes?
Phospholipids and proteins
Does the cell membrane surround the outside of all cells?
Yes.
What’s the function of the cell membrane?
Controls what enters and leaves.
Is the cell membrane living?
Yup.
What makes up the head of a phospholipid?
2 things
glycerol and phosphate
What makes up the tails of a phospholipid?
Fatty acids
Are phospholipid heads hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Hydrophilic
Are phospholipid tails hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Phospholipid tails are hydrophobic.
Can phospholipids move?
Yes they move laterally
What are three small molecules that can move easily through the phospholipid bilayer.
O2 CO2 H2O
What is the function of membrane proteins?
They help move large molecules and recognize cells.
What’s the difference between peripheral and integral proteins?
Peripheral- attached on the surface
Integral- embedded completely through the membrane
What are glycoproteins? What’s their purpose?
Carbohydrate tails aid in cell recognition
If the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall whenever the cells loses water, what happens to the plant cell?
It loses it’s shape.
Is the CELL WALL living or non living?
Non-living
What makes up the cell wall of plants?
Cellulose
What makes up the cell walls of bacteria?
Peptidoglycan
What makes up the cell wall of fungi?
Chitin
The 3 types if cells with cell walls around them
Plant, fungi, bacteria
What does the cell wall do?
It supports and protects the cell.
