Cell Parts/Organization/Turgor Pressure Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus is the (control center) brain of the cell. DNA is stored in the nucleus.
What types of cells have a nucleus?
Eukaryotic cells do and plant and animal cells but not prokaryotic.
What is the function of a cell wall?
The cell wall is made of cellulose and gives support and shape to all plant cells. The structure is strong and rigid which allows the cell to be supported as turgor pressure increases.
What two parts are found in plant cells but not animal cells?
The cell wall and chloroplasts are all things found in plant cells but not animal cells.
Which organelle is found in an animal cell but not a plant cell?
Lysosome is a organelle found in amail cells but not plant cells.
What is the function of ribosomes?
The function of ribosomes is to make protien for the cell.
What is the basic unit or building block of life?
The cell is the basic building block of life
What is the smallest unit of matter?
A atom is the smallest unit of life.
List the levels of organization from cells to biosphere
Matter, Cells, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biome, Biosphere
What does biotic mean?
Biotic means life
What does abiotic mean?
Abiotic means not living
List all three parts of the cell theory:
Cells are the bsic unit of life, All cells come from a pre-existing cells, All living things are made up of one or more cells.
Which type of cell(s) contain the organelle called a vacuole?
Plant cells are the only cells to contain vacuole
What is thigmotropism?
The turning or bending of a plant or other organism in response to a touch stimulus.
Define turgor pressure
Pressure exerted by fluid in a cell that presses the cell membrane against the cell wall.
What is the function of a vacuole?
The function of vacuole is in plant cells is to store food, water, and waste.
What is the function of chloroplast?
The function of chloroplast is it contains the pigment (chlorophyll) and helps it in photosynthesis.
Which type of cells contain ribosomes? Plant, Animal, Prokaryotic?
Ribosomes is in all plant, animal, and prokaryotic cells.
What part of the cell surrounds the entire cell (like an outer skin) and controls what comes in and out of the cell?
The cell membrae controls what goes in and out of te cell.
What is the definition of the Mitochondria?
Mitochondria is the “power house” organelle of cells. It converts food into energy (ATP).
What is the Defintion of Cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm is the gel-like fluid that fills the inside of ALL types of cells. It is the fluid that all parts of cells float in.
Which type of cell is larger, more complex, and generally rounder in shape? Eukaryotic or prokaryotic
Eukaryotic cell is the larger, more complex, and generally rounder in shape.
What is phototropism?
The turning of all or part of a plant (and other organisms) in response to the direction of light.
What is geotrophism/gravitrophism?
The turning of all or part of a plant (and other organisms) in response to the sensation or downward pull of gravity.
