Cell Respiration Flashcards
(28 cards)
Homeostasis
Maintaining a stable internal environment
Ex: heart rate increased with exercise
What causes homeostasis to maintain balance
Organisms must respond to internal and external changes to maintain balance
Ex: homeostasis with body temp.
Human body temp. Stays at 98.6 if it changes you get sick
What do all organisms need to stay alive
Energy and nutrients
How it nutrients broken down?
From food (digestion with enzymes)
How is energy extracted ?
Energy is extracted from food by more chemical reactions
What is photosynthesis
Using energy from sunlight to make food (carbohydrates=glucose)
What carries out photosynthesis
Plants algae and many single felled organisms
What is cell respiration
Getting energy from food
Who carries out cellular respiration?
All living organisms
What does glucose become?
ATP
Why are bond of glucose broken?
For energy using oxygen
What does breaking down food do
Releases energy
What is energy used for
Everything
Usable energy in the cell is what
ATP
How does ATP become ADP
When the third phosphate is removed
What does aerobic respiration require
Free oxygen
What happens to glucose in aerobic respiration
Completely oxidizes; loses electrons and breaks down
Where is energy removed from in aerobic respiration?
Glucose
When does aerobic respiration occur?
In almost all eukaryotic cells
What process doesn’t need oxygen? How many glucose are made ?
Anaerobic respiration. 2 glucose
What are the three main steps of respiration?
Glycolysis
Kreb’s
Electron transport chain
Does glycolysis require oxygen? Where is it made and how many glucose
Doesn’t need oxygen
Occurs in the cytoplasm
And only 2 glucose made
What does glycolysis break in half ? And at what temp does t happen
Breaks in half sugar and happens at low temp. Enzymes help break it down
Where does Kreb’s cycle and ETC occur and what does it break down
Occurs in he mitochondria of the cell and breaks down the rest of glucose
