Cell Respiration Flashcards
What is combustion?
Making heat energy by burning fuels all at once
What is Aerobic respiration?
Making ATP energy and heat by burning fuels in many small steps
What is energy used for in animals?
Synthesis, reproduction, active transport, movement, and temperature control
Where does energy come from?
Carbs, proteins, and lipids
What do animals get from digesting food?
ATP and materials for molecule building
What is cellular respiration?
Breaking down of food molecules inside the mitochondria to get materials and ATP
What is needed to make energy?
Mitochondria, food, oxygen, and enzymes
What is created from cellular respiration?
ATP, CO2, and water
What is the formula for the digestion of glucose?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> ATP + 6CO2 + 6H2O
Which cells are mitochondria in?
Eukaryotic cells
Why isn’t ATP stored?
It is unstable
How is energy stored long term?
Carbs and fats
What is fermentation?
Anaerobic respiration
What are the types of fermentation?
Lactic acid and alcohol fermentation
How much ATP does fermentation make?
Very little
