Cell Structure Flashcards
(11 cards)
Prokaryotes
Cells found only in the kingdom of bacteria
Single loop of DNA
No organelles or nucleus
Eukaryotes
Can be found in Fungi, Protista, Animals and Plants
Distinct nucleus with DNA in a helix
Organelles found
Cell wall
A tough outer boundary which supports the cell
Fully permeable
Cell membrane
Allows substances to enter/leave the cell
Selectively permeable
Mitochondria
Allows the cell to respire
Ribosome
Allows the cell to make proteins which enable the cell to grow
Vacuole
Permanent in a plant cell but non permanent in an animal cell
Contains water, salt and minerals
Lysosome
A sac which contains enzymes that kill toxins
Nucleus
Contains DNA which has a code to control the activity of the cell
Chloroplast
Found in plants
Contains a green pigment called chlorophyll and allows the cell to carry put photosynthesis
Cytoplasm
The liquid part of the cell where the organelles float around and where chemical reactions occur
