Cell Structure Flashcards
(15 cards)
Are animal and plant cells eukaryotic or prokaryotic?
eukaryotic
Are bacteria eukaryotic or prokaryotic?
prokaryotic
What do animal and plant cells contain?
-nucleus
-cytoplasm
-cell membrane
-mitochondria
-ribosomes
What do only plant cells contain?
-chloroplasts
-permanent vacuole
-cell wall
What is the function of the nucleus?
-contains DNA coding for a particular protein needed to build new cells
-enclosed in a nuclear membrane
What is the function of cytoplasm?
-liquid substance in which chemical reactions occur
-contains enzymes
-organelles are found in it
What is an enzyme?
biological catalysts, i.e. proteins that speed up the rate of reaction
What is the function of the cell membrane?
-controls what enters and leaves the cell
Mitochondria
-where aerobic respiration reactions occur, providing energy for the the cell
Ribosomes
-where protein synthesis occurs
-found on a structure called the rough endoplasmic reticulum
What is the function of chloroplasts?
-where photosynthesis takes place, providing food for the plant
-contains chlorophyll pigment (which makes it green) which harvests the light needed for photosynthesis
What is the function of permanent vacuole?
-contains cell sap
-found in the cytoplasm
-provides strength to the cell
What organelles are in bacteria (prokaryotic) cells?
-cytoplasm
-cell membrane
-cell wall
-single circular strand of DNA
-plasmids
What is the function of the cell wall?
- provides the cell with structural support, shape, protection, and functions as a selective barrier
-made of a different compound (peptidoglycan)
What are plasmids?
Small rings of DNA
