Cell Structure Flashcards
Name and explain the differences between the three main types of microscopes
Simple microscope: Single lens
Compound microscope: Two lenses
Electron microscope: Shows ultrastructure
Draw a labelled diagram of a microscope

What is the function of the cell membrane in animals?
Controls what enters and leaves the cell through processes of diffusion, osmosis, active transport etc.
What are cell membranes made of?
Phospholipids and proteins
What is the protoplasm
The living part of the cell
What is the function of the nucleus in animals?
Controls the activities of the cell
Describe the membrane of the nucleus
Double membrane with pores
Where is DNA mostly found in the cell?
Nucleus
What is the function of the nucleolus?
Where ribosomes are made
What is the function of nuclear pores?
To allow rRNa to pass in and out of the nucleus
What is the function of the cytoplasm in animals?
Holds cell contents in one place
What is the cytosol
Cytoplasm without the cell organelles
What is the function of mitochondria in animal cells?
Supply energy (ATP) to the cell (site of aerobic respiration - catabolic). If cell has lots of these then it needs lots of energy eg. muscle
What kind of membrane do mitochondria have?
Double membrane
What is the function of ribosomes in animal cells?
Make protein by joining amino acids
What are ribosomes made up of?
rRNA and protein
Describe the membrane of ribosomes
They don’t have one
Draw a labelled diagram of the structure of a cell membrane
N/A
What is the phospholipid bilayer made up of?
Water loving phosphate head (hydrophilic) and water hating lipid tail (hydrophobic)
Draw a labelled diagram of a cell nucleus
N/A
Draw a labelled diagram of a mitochondrion

What is the function of the cell membrane in a plant cell?
Controls what enters and leaves the cell through processes such as diffusion, osmosis and active transport
Where are cell membranes located in plant cells?
Inside the cell wall
What is the cell wall made up of?
Cellulose
