What is the cell
: the smallest working unit of a living organism.
All living things are made up of cells. They can be described as the ‘building blocks of life

What is the nucleus
The nucleus is the control centre of the cell.
• It contains chromosomes, which contain genes (DNA)
What is the cell membrane
• The cell membrane controls what enters and leaves the cell.
•• Oxygen and nutrients can enter the cell.
• Carbon dioxide and waste leave the cell.
What is cyptoplasm
A jelly like substance that suspends the cell organelle.
What is the mitochondria
• The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell.
• Respiration occurs here.
What is cell wall
Provides shape and support only.
What are chloroplast
• Photosynthesis.
• Contains green pigment chlorophyll.
• Chlorophyll traps the sunlight & makes glucose.

To prepare and examine animal cells using a light microscope
Scrape the inside of your mouth with a cotton bud.
Spread the smear of cheek cells on a glass slide.
Add two drops of methylene blue using a dropper, to stain the nucleus dark blue.
Using a mounting needle, slowly add a cover slip at a 45° angle (reduce air bubbles).
Note: The purpose of the cover slip is to protect the microscope lens.
Examine using the coarse focus wheel and then sharpen the image with the fine focus wheel.
