Cell Structure & Function Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the basic unit of life?
The cell.
What are the two main types of cells?
Prokaryotic (no nucleus) and Eukaryotic (has a nucleus).
What do all cells have in common?
Cell membrane, cytoplasm, DNA, and ribosomes.
What is the function of the nucleus?
It stores DNA and controls the cell’s activities.
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls what goes in and out of the cell.
What is the job of the mitochondria?
Produces energy (ATP); called the “powerhouse” of the cell.
What does the ribosome do?
Makes proteins.
What is the function of the chloroplast (in plant cells)?
Uses sunlight to make food (photosynthesis).
What’s the difference between plant and animal cells?
Plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts; animal cells do not.
