Cells Flashcards
(25 cards)
Living
Seven life processes
Cells
The smallest unit of life. All living organisms are constructed of cells
Tissue
A group of similar cells that are joined together
Organs
Made up of tissue
Organ systems
Made up of organs
Organisms
Made up of Organ systems
cm, mm, μm, nm
Centimeter (hundredth), millimeter (thousandth), micrometer (millionth), nanometer (billionth)
All organisms are composed of _____
All organisms are composed of one or more cells
All cells come from ______
All cells come from preexisting cells
Organelles
Play the role of keeping cells functional - “little organs”
Cell membrane
Controls what passes in and out of the cell
Chloroplast
Organelles that are responsible for photosynthesis in the cell (Only in plant cells)
Mitochondria
Organelles that transform sugar energy from the chloroplast into usable chemical energy
Vacuole
Organelle that maintains waste, water, nutrients, and structural support.
Nucleus
Contains the cell DNA and regulates activities such as growth and metabolism.
Cell wall
Provides strength and protection for the cell (Only in plant cells)
Cytosol
Semi-fluid substance that fills the interior of the cell, outlined by the cell membrane.
Cell specialisation
Cells designed to carry out a specific role in a multicellular organism, eg: Blood cells, Bone cells, Neuron, etc.
Animal cell
Belongs to a multicellular animal, typically doesn’t have a cell wall.
Cell division
The splitting of one cell into two in order to reproduce. (1 Parent cell – 2 daughter cells)
Fat cells
Large cells that store excess energy from food
Intestinal lining cells
Cells that are designed with finger like structures used to absorb water.
Muscle cell
A long thin cell that changes shape by contracting
Red Blood Cell
Round cell that carries oxygen throughout the body
