Cells Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the difference between a plant and animal cell?
Plant cells have cell walls, a permanent vacuole and chloroplasts.
What is the purpose of the cytoplasm?
The purpose of the cytoplasm is to keep structure in the cell. Also most chemical reactions take place here.
What is the purpose of the cell membrane?
The purpose of the cell membrane is to control what enters and exits the cell. It also provides structure for the cell.
What is the purpose of the Mitochondrion?
The mitochondrion are the main producer of the cell’s energy. They are where aerobic respiration takes place.
what is the purpose of the Nucleus?
The purpose of a Nucleus is to contain all genetic code for a cell, and to control the cell’s actions.
What is the purpose of the ribosome?
The purpose of a Ribosome is to produce proteins. It is the site of protein synthesis.
Name 3 sub-cellular structures in a eucaryotic ell.
Some sub-cellular features of a eucaryotic cell are: Cell membrane, Cell wall, Cytoplasm, Ribosome, Chloroplasts, Mitochondria and Nucleus.
Name 2 sub-cellular structures in a procaryotic cell that isn’t in a Eucaryotic cell.
Flagellum, Chromosomal DNA
Describe how sperm cells are adapted to their function.
Sperm cell are adapted to their function, as they have a small “head” and a large (for their size) Flagellum. In their head, they also have entirely mitochondrion, as they need to swim large distances. They also have Acrosome, which is a substance that allows them to enter the egg cell. A haploid nucleus, which has half the DNA contents of a regular cell, to allow their DNA to merge with that of the egg cell.
Describe how egg cells are adapted to their function.
Egg cell are adapted to their function, as they have nutrients in the cytoplasm, which keeps the cell alive until the cell is connected up to the mother. A haploid nucleus, which has half the DNA contents of a regular cell, to allow their DNA to merge with that of the sperm cell. also, the cell membrane doesn’t allow any more sperm cells after the first, to avoid overfertilization.
What is the ciliated epithelial cell’s function?
Ciliated epithelium performs the function of moving particles or fluid over the epithelial surface
What is the purpose of a Chloroplast?
The purpose of a chloroplast is to produce energy, it does this by Photosynthesis.
