Cells Flashcards
What do osteoclasts do ?
Resorb bone matrix and releasing key minerals, including calcium, back into the bloodstream
Where are chondrocytes found ?
Trapped inside the lacunae of cartilage
What is yellow bone marrow ?
A tissue within a long bone that is primarily composed of adipose
What is chromatin ?
Loose threads of DNA
What is the site for protein synthesis for all cells ?
Ribosomes
Name 3 functions of smooth ER.
Detoxification of poisons
Calcium Storage
Metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates
What’s filtration ?
A process in which a physical pressure forces fluid through a selectively permeable membrane
What’s simple diffusion ?
The net movement of particles from a place of high concentration to low concentration.
Why does sugar diffuse more quickly in hot tea than iced tea ?
The warmer a substance is, the more rapidly its particles diffuse.
What is the net flow of water from one side of a selectively permeable membrane to the other ?
Osmosis
Why do cells use the channel proteins aquaporins ?
To increase or decrease the rate of osmosis
How can the kidneys increase the rate of urinary water loss ?
By installing more aquaporins in the membrane
